Guides / Identify from YouTube
How to identify a song from a YouTube video or Short
Find the track in a YouTube video, Short or full DJ set: chapters, the description, the comments, the deck screen, and long-mix mode for a timestamped tracklist.
The quick answer
Copy the YouTube link, paste it into ID Crate's Detect Audio and press Detect. The clip is fingerprinted through four recognition services, the frames are read for deck screens and overlays, the caption is parsed and the platform's own tags are checked, and the fused result is verified against Spotify and Apple Music. Most scans finish in one to three minutes. The free plan includes five a month.
If you would rather try by hand first, the free methods below work often enough to be worth thirty seconds.
Copy the link
Links look like youtube.com/watch?v=…, youtu.be/… or youtube.com/shorts/….
- Use Share, then Copy, or copy the address bar. Timestamps in the link are fine.
- Shorts links work like normal videos.
Try the free methods first
- Read the description first. Uploaders of sets often include a tracklist or a 1001Tracklists link, and chapters show up as timestamps.
- Sort the comments by newest and search for "ID" or a timestamp. Someone has usually asked.
- Pause at the deck screen. Big-channel sets often show the CDJ display in the cutaways.
- For a full set, note the timestamp of the track you want before you ask anyone.
What ID Crate does with a YouTube link
- Comment mining: the top comments are pulled and any answers to "ID?" are parsed, which is unique to YouTube.
- Caption parsing on the description, including timestamped tracklists.
- Audio fingerprinting on the first minute for a normal video, or in overlapping segments across the whole set in long-mix mode.
- Vision over the frames for deck screens and on-screen tracklists.
YouTube quirks worth knowing
- A normal scan covers the first 60 seconds. For a whole set, use long-mix mode (Pro Plus) and you get a timestamped tracklist for up to 10 minutes of coverage per scan.
- Age-restricted and members-only videos cannot be fetched.
- Auto-generated topic channels already name the track in the title, so a scan is rarely needed there.
When nothing identifies it
An unreleased track is not in any database, and that is the case for a lot of what gets filmed in clubs. When every signal draws a blank, the clip's audio is compared with every other unidentified scan so you find out if the same unknown ID has been heard elsewhere. From there you can share the hunt with the community, or add it to your crate as an ID and let the daily scanner check the stores until the day it is released.
Questions
- Can it tracklist a two-hour set?
- Long-mix mode analyses overlapping 30-second segments and returns a timestamped list. It costs 1 credit per 2 minutes analysed and shows the estimate before you confirm.
- Why does it read the comments?
- Because the crowd usually gets there first. When someone has answered "ID at 43:20", that answer is worth more than a fingerprint of noisy audio.
