Guides / Identify from Instagram
How to identify a song from an Instagram reel, post or story
Find the track in an Instagram reel, carousel post or story: the tagged sound, the caption and comments, the deck screen, and how to run all of it at once.
The quick answer
Copy the Instagram link, paste it into ID Crate's Detect Audio and press Detect. The clip is fingerprinted through four recognition services, the frames are read for deck screens and overlays, the caption is parsed and the platform's own tags are checked, and the fused result is verified against Spotify and Apple Music. Most scans finish in one to three minutes. The free plan includes five a month.
If you would rather try by hand first, the free methods below work often enough to be worth thirty seconds.
Copy the link
Links look like instagram.com/reel/…, instagram.com/p/… or instagram.com/stories/….
- Tap the share arrow under the reel or post, then Copy link.
- On desktop, open the post and copy the address bar.
- Stories: tap the three dots, Copy link. Stories expire after 24 hours, so paste it the same day.
Try the free methods first
- Look under the reel for a tagged sound. If it names a real track rather than "original audio", tap it: that is the answer.
- Read the caption for a tracklist or an artist tag, and the comments for someone who has already asked and been answered.
- Pause on any frame that shows a CDJ, Rekordbox or Serato screen and zoom in.
- Try Shazam with the phone held up to the speaker while the reel plays.
What ID Crate does with a Instagram link
- Audio fingerprinting with samples at several points, because reels often open on a crowd or a voice before the music is clean.
- Vision over the frames, which is where deck screens, caption banners and end cards give the name away.
- Caption parsing for tracklists, handles and event details.
- For carousel posts, each slide is scanned on its own, up to 20.
Instagram quirks worth knowing
- Instagram changes its extractors often. ID Crate keeps two independent downloaders and a third fallback, and refunds the credit if a post cannot be fetched.
- Private accounts cannot be read. The post has to be public.
- Carousels with a mix of photos and videos are fine: photo slides are skipped and do not cost credits.
When nothing identifies it
An unreleased track is not in any database, and that is the case for a lot of what gets filmed in clubs. When every signal draws a blank, the clip's audio is compared with every other unidentified scan so you find out if the same unknown ID has been heard elsewhere. From there you can share the hunt with the community, or add it to your crate as an ID and let the daily scanner check the stores until the day it is released.
Questions
- Does it work on stories?
- Yes, while the story is live. Paste it the same day.
- What if the reel uses "original audio"?
- That is exactly when fingerprinting and the vision model earn their keep. Original audio just means the poster did not tag a track; the audio is still there to identify.
